Consumers require enhanced features such as versioning, commenting and one-click file sharing with partners, customers and coworkers. Amazon announced their Storage Gateway (beta) on January 25th, about two days before my article on VMWare and Citrix squaring off in the "Dropbox for Enteprise" market. In my article I noted that VMWare and Citrix are exploiting a based limitation of Dropbox, Evernote and Box introduced by supporting a Consumerization of IT (CoIT) product. Consumer-based file-share-and-synch applications cannot be installed in a company's data center. As file-share-synch drives cloud adoption in the enterprise, vendors emerge from all corners. Earlier this month DCIG shared some key opportunities poised to make a splash in 2012. Near the top of the list is the Mobile First approach to product development, which is now threatening to disrupt the adoption of traditional Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI). Leading the charge is a combination that VMWare and Citrix both plan to deliver this year: VDI-like application delivery by way of a Mobile First approach, focused on the already widespread adoption of tablet devices in the enterprise. About a month ago I started to put some thought and research into what might emerge as the top trends of 2012 by keeping a notebook next to my keyboard so as ideas struck me I could jot them down. In the product and investing world, $1 billion dollars is interesting. Interesting markets draw new and existing companies. Derrick Harris of Gigaom believes Amazon's latest filing indicates they will have exceeded $1 billion dollars in revenue for Amazon Web Services by year end. $1 billion dollars creates a lot of interest by existing and venture backed product companies. IBM briefed DCIG on the details around its October Active Cloud Engine product announcement on Wednesday, November 16, of this past week. The briefing covered three functional areas, two products, one statement of direction and ironically nothing about the cloud. However, IBM deserves kudos for making a big change to its scale out NAS (SONAS) product during its Active Cloud Engine product announcement. (read more)

Consumerization of content consumption models exposes opportunities to incorporate business process metadata with Big Data. Consumerization includes proliferation of social networks, content syndication and mobile devices, such as Apple iPAD, Samsung Tablet, etc. Consumerization of content merging with Enterprise Business Big Data is a challenge best met by standardized content interfaces. One would think that at some point organizations would reach the tipping point for storage consumption and that year-over-year storage capacity growth rates of 30%, 50%, 100% or more would come to an end, or at least slow down. If so, it hasn't occurred yet and, if anything, it shows every sign of continuing for the foreseeable future. Nowhere is this more evident than with the amount of data that companies need to archive and retain. (read more)

Grid computing is starting to appear in some unlikely places. It is easy to assume that grid computing appears primarily in the world of academia or high tech corporate IT engineering labs. In these environments, computer scientists typically have the time and expertise to engineer complicated, high performance, low cost computing solutions that can perform tasks like mapping out the human DNA or identifying possible new sites to drill for oil. But applying grid computing to address a low-tech problem like backup and recovery? That almost seems like a misnomer. (read more)
