Identifying who the "best" individual is to handle backup and recovery within an organization has always been at best a crapshoot. The choice usually came down to some arbitrary evaluation of a person's education, experience, knowledge, skills and their willingness to perform the task which had mixed results. Everyone hates to deal with clutter and perhaps nowhere is this truer than when it comes to managing data. Knowingly or otherwise, enterprises tend to sweep data management tasks under the proverbial rug since they rarely see its true cost or feel its impact. That perception changed significantly in 2012 as more organizations are starting to feel the sting of being unable to find the information they need simply because they have too much data in too many places to effectively search it. Bring your own device (BYOD) file-sync-and-sharing has exploded in 2012. There are over forty (40) companies offering at least one product to organizations of all sizes. Over half of those companies offer a consumer grade version of their file-sync-and-share. To date, backup has been largely driven by a single business objective: creating a recoverable copy of data. But as business service level agreements (SLAs) continue to demand ever shorter application recovery times, creating backups - even if they are good backups - without having any visibility into expected recovery times is simply not enough. The ramifications of organizations not getting data under control are significant. Recent analyst studies find that structured data stores may grow by as much as 60% annually and unstructured data stores by as much as 80% annually. Aggravating this situation, once all of this data is consolidated, the hardware costs associated with scaling the storage infrastructure to accommodate this data growth may be a factor of up to 10x of what it costs prior to consolidation.
